Lookout Show`n Tell #1: The
Garbage Pit
We introduced "Show 'n Tell" at the 2009
FFLA Conference in Snohomish, with a "talkie Tooter". What's that, you
say? Well, snooze, you lose. Maybe later,
but...
This week's Show 'n Tell item is pictured
below.
Back in the '30s & '40s, USFS lookouts and
campgrounds had garbage pits; a large hole in the ground, covered, with a
flip-up heavy cast iron lid. It emitted a sound that
bears could hear a mile away when us kids would stand there and
flip the lid in the evening 'til the bears came to entertain
us.
